The Sansglu take
The place
Potato Champion anchors Cartopia, the original food cart pod at SE 12th and Hawthorne, and has been a late-night Portland institution since 2008. The cart built its name on Belgian-style fries and poutine, and today the entire menu is gluten-free.
The gluten-free setup
Everything the cart makes is gluten-free: the gravies are thickened with potato starch, and staff keep gluten-containing food off the cart entirely. One heads-up from celiac diners: a self-serve malt vinegar bottle sits out for customers, so skip it and you're clear.
What to order
The menu lists the Classic Poutine with cheese curds and a choice of beef, vegetarian, or vegan gravy, the Thai-style Satay Poutine, and the PB&J Fries with satay sauce and chipotle raspberry jam.
The move
Go on a Friday or Saturday, when the cart runs until midnight; safe late-night food is the rarest thing in a celiac's week, and this is exactly that.
