The Sansglu take
The place
The Whole Bowl's Hawthorne location is a small walk-up counter at 4526 SE Hawthorne Blvd in the Hawthorne District, one of 13 Portland-metro locations of a single-dish chain Tali Ovadia started as a food cart in 2001. Ryan Carpenter of the smoothie chain Moberi bought the company in January 2025 and kept the menu unchanged (Willamette Week, Jan 6 2025). Open daily 11am to 9pm.
The gluten-free setup
The entire menu is one dish, and the official site describes it as nut, gluten, wheat, hydrogenated oil and guilt free. FindMeGlutenFree lists the Hawthorne location as reported dedicated gluten-free. There is no GFCO or GFFP certification on file, so treat this as a strong first-party claim rather than a lab-certified one.
What to order
There is only one dish: brown rice, black and red beans, avocado, cilantro, black olives, Tillamook cheddar, sour cream, salsa and the signature lemon-garlic Tali Sauce, named for founder Tali Ovadia. Ask for it vegan to swap out the cheese and sour cream.
The move
Order at the counter. There is no menu to parse, so most orders are out in a few minutes. Confirm hours before a special trip since Moberi's 2025 ownership change has come with new Whole Bowl locations opening around Portland.
