The Sansglu take
The place
Mauby is a neighborhood dining room in Brockley, south east London, opened in summer 2024 inside a former fish and chip shop. Daniel and Heleena Maynard ran the Jerk Off BBQ pop-up in Deptford for years before crowdfunding this permanent site. It is an evening spot, small and locally owned, with a short cocktail list built around mauby, a Caribbean bark syrup.
The gluten-free setup
The kitchen cooks Caribbean food that never needed wheat, and the restaurant describes its seasonal menu as all naturally gluten free. Celiac diners report eating across the whole menu without symptoms. The bar stocks regular craft beer, so the gluten-free claim covers the food menu rather than the entire drinks list.
What to order
The menu changes with the seasons, so look for the fried chicken with its dry rub, fried plantain, and the pickle plate. The kitchen's jerk cooking carries over from the founders' barbecue years; critics tell readers to order the fried chicken first when it is on.
The move
There is no phone, so book online. Dinner runs Wednesday to Saturday 5:30 to 11 and Sunday to 9, with the kitchen closing about 90 minutes before the room. Brockley station is a short walk; treat it as an evening booking, not a walk-in lunch stop.
