Fatamorgana Croce opened in July 2023 as the sixth Rome location for Fatamorgana Gelato, timed to the brand's 20th anniversary since founder Maria Agnese Spagnuolo opened her first lab in 2003, the same year she was diagnosed celiac. The roughly 40-square-meter shop sits at Via della Croce 46/47 in the Campo Marzio rione, the shopping strip locals call the Tridente, a few minutes' walk from the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso. Opening-day photos show a compact counter room: tiled floor, glass display case, a handful of bar stools rather than table seating.
The gluten-free setup
Fatamorgana is a whole-brand gluten-free gelato house, not a shop with a GF menu added on. The current the verified celiac community listing for this address reports it dedicated gluten-free, tagging a dedicated kitchen and knowledgeable staff across 45 community ratings. The brand's own recipe catalog labels every flavor's allergens individually, and every flavor we checked, Kentucky chocolate, Syrian pistachio, black rice, came back gluten-free. A celiac food writer who visited in August 2023 confirmed the cones are "100% senza glutine" chain-wide and that the gluten-free cakes in the case, caprese and pavlova among them, carry the same label. We found no third-party lab certification on any source, so call this a consistently labeled dedicated operation rather than a certified one.
What to order
Look for the Kentucky, the shop's best-known flavor: dark chocolate infused with Kentucky tobacco leaf, a combination that keeps showing up in reviews and press and still sits on the brand's current recipe list. For something lighter, the Syrian pistachio or the black rice with rosebuds, calvados, and lime zest are both current flavors that come back gluten-free on the shop's own allergen labels. The gluten-free cakes in the case, caprese and pavlova among them, are worth a look if gelato isn't what you're after.
The move
Every cone in the case is gluten-free by default here, so skip the usual cross-contact questions and just point at what you want. The shop itself is small, about 40 square meters, on one of the busiest tourist blocks in Rome, so if the line runs out the door, Fatamorgana's Centro Storico location on Via dei Chiavari near Campo de' Fiori runs the same menu with fewer crowds.
