Violette Bakers is a small dedicated gluten-free bakery on Massachusetts Avenue near Porter Square, Cambridge. It is a counter-and-a-few-seats operation that hand-mills much of its own flour and leans on fresh, local, and organic ingredients. Alongside the pastry case there is pizza by the slice and made-to-order sandwiches.
The gluten-free setup
The whole bakery is gluten-free, so everything in the case, the pizza, and the sandwich bread comes out of one dedicated kitchen. The bakery describes itself as 100% gluten-free and mills much of its own flour in house, which keeps the supply chain short.
What to order
Look for the brioche donuts and the sourdough and challah loaves, which celiac diners single out in recent reports. Pizza by the slice is the sleeper here; bagel sandwiches appear on Saturdays only.
The move
Go on a Saturday morning: bagel sandwiches only run that day, and the pastry case is fullest early. Hours are temporarily shortened to a 5 pm close, so treat it as a daytime stop. Closed Sunday and Monday; call or text 857-500-2748 to confirm the day's bake.
