Gluten free at the Chicago Marathon: the carb-load plan for celiacs

Race-morning carbs from a bakery with no wheat flour in the building. Every kitchen below is 100% gluten free or clearly marked as ask-first.
The short version
- Two kitchens within half a mile of the finish line are 100% gluten free: BIBIBOP on Jackson and SEOULSPICE on Michigan Avenue. Both are rice bowls, which is exactly what a runner wants the night before.
- The official $50 Millennium Hall pasta dinner on October 9 and 10 does not say the word gluten anywhere on its page. Call before you book, and treat it as a skip until someone says yes.
- For a real sit-down dinner, ride out to Avondale or Roscoe Village: CheSa’s Bistro & Bar and Kite String Cantina are dedicated gluten-free kitchens with the carbs to match.
- The carb-load guides that rank for this race barely mention celiac, and one still sends you to Bloom, which closed in February 2026.
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon runs Sunday, October 11, 2026, with the expo at McCormick Place from Thursday to Saturday and the start and finish in Grant Park. Every carb-load guide for the weekend points at the same red-sauce dinners and the same all-you-can-eat pasta night. None of them answer the celiac question: where can you eat a big plate of carbs without a shared pasta pot? We checked. Here is the plan for the night before, the morning of, and the walk back from the finish.
The kitchens that work

BIBIBOP Asian Grill
East Jackson Boulevard, the Loop · 0.2 mi from the finishThe closest 100% gluten-free kitchen to Grant Park. The whole menu, not a section of it.
OrderA bowl on purple rice with double rice and a protein. The chain says its entire menu is gluten free and carries a Gluten Intolerance Group certification, so there is no wheat to route around.
SkipThe hours, not the food. This is an office-district location and the published schedule is weekdays, so plan it for Friday and confirm before a Saturday walk.
Evidence: First-party: the chain’s own “100% gluten-free menu” statement and GIG certification.

SEOULSPICE
20 N Michigan Avenue · 0.5 mi from the finishKorean rice bowls across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park, and every sauce is made in house without wheat.
OrderA Korrito bowl or bibimbap with extra rice. Staff say the marinades and sauces are all gluten free and made on site, which is the part that usually fails at a Korean counter.
SkipNothing on the menu. Confirm weekend hours before you rely on it for Saturday night.
Evidence: First-party at staff level: the chain’s “entire menu is 100% gluten-free” statement plus a staff answer on sauces. No written FAQ on the brand site yet.

Brightwok Kitchen
21 E Adams Street, the Loop · 0.3 mi from the finishRice and noodle bowls that have been 100% gluten free for years. One unresolved report means ask first.
OrderA rice bowl with your protein, after you ask one question: does anything on the menu now contain gluten? The website still says the entire menu is gluten free. A 2026 diner report says one item was added that is not. We could not settle it.
SkipDo not assume. If the answer is yes, ask how it is kept separate before you order.
Evidence: First-party “100% gluten-free” statement on brightwok.com, flagged with a community report we could not verify either way.

CheSa’s Bistro & Bar
3235 W Addison Street, Avondale · Wednesday to SundayThe sit-down carb-load dinner. A chef who was diagnosed with celiac built a Creole kitchen with no gluten in it.
OrderJambalaya or red beans and rice, plus the fried green beans, because the fryer has never seen wheat. Book for Friday or Saturday; race-weekend tables go.
SkipNothing on the plate. Monday and Tuesday it is closed.
Evidence: Chef-owner interviews with WTTW and ABC7 describing a 100% gluten-free kitchen; open and reviewed through September 2026.

Kite String Cantina
1851 W Addison Street, Roscoe VillageHand-pressed corn taquitos, rice and beans in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen.
OrderA taquito flight with rice and beans. The tortillas are pressed in house from corn and the kitchen is built gluten free.
SkipThe beer taps that pour regular beer. They run on separate lines, but ask for the gluten-free list.
Evidence: Owner statements on the dedicated kitchen, confirmed for our August 2026 feature.

Wheat’s End Cafe & Bakery
543 W Diversey Parkway, Lakeview · carryout, Tuesday to Sunday until 3pmRace-morning and post-race carbs from a bakery with no wheat flour on the premises.
OrderThe popover with honey butter, and bagels for the hotel room on Saturday. The owners’ first restaurant, Senza, earned Michelin stars with a gluten-free kitchen; this is their bakery.
SkipDinner. It is carryout only and closes at 3pm, so it is the morning stop, not the night before.
Evidence: Dedicated gluten-free bakery, first-party; open with reviews through July 2026.

The asks and the skips
- Millennium Hall pasta dinner (October 9 and 10, $50): the event page lists salads, appetizers, pasta dishes and desserts and says nothing about gluten, allergies or accommodations. Call 11 N Michigan before you reserve, and ask about a separate pot
- Any Italian carb-load that boils gluten-free pasta in shared water: the pasta is fine, the pot is not. Ask about the water before the menu
- Expo samples at McCormick Place: bars, gels and oat products with no ingredient panel in your hand; read the label or skip the tray
- The 27th Mile post-race party: beer tickets buy barley beer; bring your own celebration or find a cider
- Course-side spectator bars: pretzels, wings from shared fryers and pitchers; fuel your cheering squad, not the runner
- Bloom Plant Based Kitchen: closed for good in February 2026, and still listed in older carb-load guides
- ingrained (River North): a real dedicated gluten-free shop, but it sells snack bars and butter cups, not a dinner
Common Decency in Logan Square is reported by Chicago Food Magazine as fully gluten free because an owner has celiac, with a gnudi cacio e pepe on the menu. We could not find that statement on the restaurant’s own site, so it stays a call-first option rather than a pick.

For a sit-down dinner, CheSa’s Bistro & Bar in Avondale and Kite String Cantina in Roscoe Village are dedicated gluten-free kitchens serving jambalaya, rice and beans, and corn taquitos.
Is the Chicago Marathon pasta dinner gluten free?
The Millennium Hall pasta dinner on October 9 and 10, 2026 does not mention gluten, allergies or dietary accommodations on its event page. Is anything in this guide certified gluten free?
BIBIBOP carries a Gluten Intolerance Group certification for its menu. The others are first-party claims from the owners or chains, and one, Brightwok Kitchen, carries a community caution flag. This guide names the source for every claim and never upgrades a community report to a fact.
What about race morning and after the finish?
Wheat’s End Cafe & Bakery in Lakeview opens at 8:30am with popovers and bagels from a wheat-free building, carryout only. After the finish, the Loop kitchens are a short walk from Grant Park, with BIBIBOP the closest at about 0.2 miles.
How long is this guide valid?
Through race day, October 11, 2026. The Chicago kitchens in it are permanent listings in the Sansglu app, so the map stays useful after the marathon.
Verified against primary sources including the Chicago Marathon race weekend schedule, Millennium Hall pasta dinner page, BIBIBOP 100% gluten-free statement, ABC7 on CheSa’s gluten-free kitchen, Bloom closure report. Community reports are attributed as such and are never presented as verification.
